The Human Being’s Spiritual Journey Toward God

Taqwa is not a barrier that restricts a person; rather, it is a system of awareness and choice. A God-conscious person does not act out of fear, but makes decisions based on their understanding of good and evil.

Hawzah News Agency | In a soul-inspiring supplication, Imam Sajjad, peace be upon him, asks Almighty God in the following words:

«وَ اجْعَلْ تَقْوَاکَ مِنَ الدُّنْیَا زَادِی وَ إِلَی رَحْمَتِکَ رِحْلَتِی وَ فِی مَرْضَاتِکَ مَدْخَلِی‏.‏»

O God, make piety my provision for the journey in this world, make the attainment of Your mercy the destination of my journey, and make Your pleasure my abode. (Sahifah Sajjadiyyah, Supplication no. 21)

Explanation:

These radiant words present an image of the human being’s spiritual journey—a journey whose beginning is taqwa (piety), whose path is mercy, and whose ultimate destination is Divine pleasure.

This journey begins with the finest of provisions: a provision called taqwa. It is that spiritual light which, when a person adorns themselves with it, protects them from the misguidance of this world and prepares them to receive and embrace the vast mercy of God.

As the Holy Qur’an states:

«وَتَزَوَّدُوا فَإِنَّ خَیْرَ الزَّادِ التَّقْوَی.»

And take provision, for indeed the best provision is Godwariness. (Baqarah; 2:197)

It is worth noting that taqwa is not a barrier that restricts a person; rather, it is a system of awareness and choice. A God-conscious person does not act out of fear, but makes decisions based on their understanding of good and evil.

In fact, taqwa grants human beings true freedom, for it liberates them from enslavement to their desires and from external pressures.

The Holy Qur’an points to this truth as follows:

«یَا أَیُّهَا الَّذِینَ آمَنُوا إِنْ تَتَّقُوا اللَّهَ یَجْعَلْ لَکُمْ فُرْقَانًا.»

O you who have faith! If you are wary of Allah, He shall appoint a criterion for you. (Anfal; 8:29)

In another verse, He says:

«وَمَنْ یَتَّقِ اللَّهَ یَجْعَلْ لَهُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ یُسْرًا.»

And whoever is wary of Allah, He shall grant him ease in his affairs. (Talaq; 65:4)

Therefore, in order to traverse the path of Divine mercy and ultimately reach the final destination—the abode of Divine pleasure—one must adorn oneself with taqwa.
